Blue Jays crank out the hits versus Padres

Hitting and running in practice paid off handsomely for the Blue Jays in their game with the Padres Sunday, October 16 at Bethesda Elementary School.

William Amorosi, Gavin Ferguson, Ethan Yu, John Wyatt, George Roggie, Sam Berman, Ryan Groban, Braden Poon, Jack Raymond, Jeremy Robertson and Jake Schuman made for an eleven-man hit parade!

This was a complete team effort. Every player hit safely and either scored a run or drove in a run.

The final score was Blue Jays 20, Padres 1.

October 16 Game Report

Ethan Yu is a beast when he has a bat in his hands. Here, he squares up and rocks a double to left field in the first inning. He then collected singles in the third and sixth innings.

Ethan scored a run and drove in two. He's now hitting .588 on the season with seven runs scored and seven RBI.

Ethan also turned in some impressive work in the infield. Above, he delivers a perfect strike to Braden Poon after scooping up a ground ball at 2nd base in the third inning.

Check out Jake Schuman's defensive highlight in the photo above. After snatching a ground ball behind the pitching rubber, Jake outran the base runner to 3rd base and made the force play to end the bottom half of the second inning.

Here, Jake displays perfect form at the plate, keeping his head down and watching the ball until it hits his bat. Not surprisingly, this swing resulted in a line drive triple that would have rolled across Arlington Road had the fence not been in the way!

Here's Jake rounding 3rd base. Notice the fielder picking the ball out of the fence in the background. Jake later notched two singles, scored two runs, and collected an RBI.

Jeremy Robertson scorched an extra base hit in the fourth inning. His line drive double to left field excited the crowd and drove in a run!

Jeremy earned the right to flex his muscles, adding a single, scoring two runs, and driving in two more.

Here, Jeremy gets down in ready position at 2nd base. He also played well at shortstop, catcher, and multiple outfield positions.

The courageous Jack Raymond came back from a stint on the disabled list and immediately accepted a catching assignment. Above, Jack's dad helps hims suit up as Torsdon Poon gives him a pat on the head for encouragement. Not surprisingly, Jack handled the job like a seasoned professional.

Jack also proved to be a fine addition to the Blue Jays' offensive lineup. Above, he prepares to crank a single in the fifth inning.

Jack toured the bases throughout the afternoon. He had two hits, reached on a fielder's choice, and drove in a run in an auspicious Blue Jays debut!

Sam Berman logged another fantastic performance in the game with the Padres. His 4-for-4 day included a line drive triple to the fence in left field, a double, two singles, three runs scored and two RBI.

A model of consistency, Sam is now 12-for-12 with six runs scored and eight RBI in three games this season.

Sam's defensive highlights included this outstanding catch of a throw from Braden Poon to complete an assisted put-out at 1st base in the fifth inning.

Braden was ready to play in the game with the Padres. In addition to his fine work at pitcher's helper, he did an admirable job at 1st base and 2nd base.

Here, Braden bangs an RBI double to left field in the second inning. He slammed a single in the first and a double in the fifth. Braden scored once and tied for game high honors with four runs batted in.

Braden leads the team with twelve RBI in four games this season. He has also scored eight runs, good for second on the team.

George Roggie was an effective lead-off hitter, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two singles, three runs scored and four RBI.

Above, George hustles to 1st base after hitting an RBI double to center field. George increased his season RBI total to seven. He has scored eleven runs in four games to lead the team.

The rare young player who prefers catching the ball to hitting it, George made an unassisted put-out at 1st base in the fourth inning.

Ryan Groban made the most of his opportunities at 2nd base. His pickup of a ball in the dirt in the second inning was a thing of beauty! In the sixth inning, Ryan cleanly fielded a grounder and beat the runner to the bag at 2nd base to get the unassisted put-out.

A consistent contact hitter throughout the season, Ryan continued to produce in the game with the Padres. He went 3-for-3 with three singles and three runs scored.

Ryan is having an awesome first season with the Blue Jays. In addition to his .765 batting average, he has scored six runs and notched six RBI in four games.

Gavin Ferguson seems to get better with each trip to the plate. He followed up last week's clutch performance with another big day.

Here, Gavin runs through the bag at 1st base after smacking a single in the fifth inning. Gavin belted three singles, scored a run, and delivered two RBI in an outstanding offensive performance.

Check out Gavin's fantastic throwing technique at the catcher position. Notice that his arm is raised above his head at a 90 degree angle. That's perfect!

William Amorosi played at the catcher position in the first inning. After Tom Yu helped him suit up, William went out and caught several pitches before they could hit the ground. That was impressive!

Batting in the number three spot, William gave the Blue Jays a spark at the top of the order. He scorched base hits in the first and third innings.

Here, William completes the trip home to score a run in the third inning. William also scored in the first inning.

John Wyatt hit the ball solidly in each trip to the plate. His RBI double to left field in the second inning was particularly outstanding.

Here, John rounds third and rumbles home to put another run on the scoreboard. John reached on a fielder's choice on three different occasions. He also scored twice and drove in two runs.

John's mom and dad helped him put on the gear so that he could take an outstanding turn behind the plate in the fifth inning. John also made a great play at 3rd base in the second inning, smoothly fielding a ground ball and delivering a good throw to Ryan Groban at 2nd base.

When the game was over, the Blue Jays lined up and thanked the Padres for taking part in a fun game on a beautiful afternoon.

Thank You Notes

Thanks to Coach Tom Yu for giving sage advice to the many base runners who crossed his path at 1st base.

As usual, Tom also carried lots of gear. In fact, he is the primary reason that Coach Steve has made it to the final week of the season without losing anything.

Thanks, Tom!

One of the many great things that Gavin Ferguson brought to the team this season is his dad.

Brian Ferguson again coached at 3rd base. He also helped the batters warm up in the on deck circle.

Thanks, Brian!

Landon Poon again relieved Brian in the 3rd base coaching box. Here, Landon appears to chase his brother all the way to home plate.

That's good motivation!

The Blue Jays kept scorekeeper Susan Poon very busy. The statistics in this game report indicate that she was up to the task.

Thanks, Susan!

Thanks to Team Berman for providing the post game refreshments. Above, Nicole Fradette Berman distributes the drinks.

Meanwhile, Steve Berman passed out the snacks.

Thanks, Berman Family!

We did not get a photo of Trista Robertson because she was the one who took the pictures. This is a file photo.

Had it not been for Trista's efforts, this game report would have consisted solely of Coach Steve's hackneyed prose.

Thank you so much, Trista!

One More to Go Blue Jays!

The Blue Jays have one final opportunity to captivate their dads.

Our final game of the season is next week. We hope that you will stick around after the game for a brief season-ending celebration.

Go Blue Jays!

Coach Steve
